“Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.” – Ingmar Bergman.

Well, the above statement is absolutely true when it is applied “Rathnam-Rahman” paradigm. Rathnam – well known for the simplicity which is conveyed through striking imagery, for his affinity in portraying the diversity of life and culture in subtle images that are so unique, unspoiled that it blends in faultlessly with our understanding of ordinary and extraordinary. Rahman – well known for his immensely transcending experience with the music. Their combined efforts: assembling the cinema for the audience to partake in the simple observations of life, void with premeditated generalization. Often, “Rathnam-Rahman”-ism is accompanied by the surreal, enigmatic verses of Vairamuthu (Recipient of Silver Lotus Award for Best Lyrics – 6 Times!) that generate an aura which immortalizes the melody. It is pure, perennial bliss that radiates which uplifts the soul to a different dimension altogether.

Ergo, this is a modest effort in preparing a list of top songs of “Rathnam-Rahman” that has profoundly influenced, changed music in Bollywood, Tamil Cinema and involuntarily prepares our yearning to return again and again to the emotions the film has given us, with our experience deepened each time by new impressions. The criteria or the baseline for it be selected, rests upon simple yet effective composition of verses, brilliant composition of tunes and choreography which sensitively enhance the overall mood of the song sequence, thereby elevating the film.

10. “Narumugaye” of Iruvar (1997), Singers: Unnikrishnan, Bombay Jayashree  

An excellent classical song for a fictionalized political drama in which Aishwarya Rai made a debut and Prakash Raj, Santosh Sivan won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography respectively. Incorporated with two Carnatic ragas—”Naatai” and “Ghambeera Naatai”, Narumugaye is artfully elegant!

09. “Ranjha Ranjha/ Kaattu Sirukki” of Raavan/Raavanan (2010), Singers: Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali/Shankar Mahadevan, Anuradha Sriram

Fabulous singing from Rekha and Javed makes this one of the best duets of 21st century.

08. “Oru deivam thantha poove” of Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) Singers: Chinmayi, P. Jayachandran

For rising above the conventions of film songs to reach the realms of poetry, Vairamuthu won the national award for the best lyrics and ARR received the national award for the best music direction. Chinmayi’s fabulous vocals, highlights on what a peck on the cheek is all about.

07. “Barso Re/ Ven Megham” of Guru (2007) Singers: Shreya Ghoshal, Uday Mazumdar

Fantastic singing from Shreya who won Best Female Playback Filmfare award, Rahman his 7th.

06. “Khabie neem neem/Sandakkozhi” of Yuva/ Aaytha Ezhuthu (2004) Singers: Madhushree, A. R. Rahman
Kabhi Neem Neem is gem of a song and it’s just perfect in the composition, vocals and lyrics. ARR’s alaaps throughout the piece are a treat for the ears as Rahman really does weave his magic all around this number!

05.  “Kadhal Sadugudu/Aye udi udi udi” of Alaipayuthey/Saathiya (2000/2002) Singers: S.P.Balasubramaniam, Charan/Adnan Sami
The song which is shot entirely in reverse direction but still maintains the elegance and richness of human expression and is one of my all time favorite video song of Rathnam movies.

Mani Rathnam on Kadhal Sadugudu: “These are two young people inside a house. They had wanted to get married, and just tied the knot. It’s the first phase of their life and it was magical, with a floating quality. When it’s in high speed and reverse, it has this surreal quality to it. If you see the song again, you will know. Those are the kind of things that you try. You have seen two people in love hundreds of times; unless you give a new angle to it, it’s not going to excite. The cinematographer is one person I pull into when I think of new ideas.”

04. “Ae Ajanabi/ Poongkaatrilae” of Dil Se (1998), Singers: Udit Narayan, Mahalakshmi Iyer/ Unni Menon, Swarnalatha
One of the most simplest and haunting piece of music that endears itself, and is beautifully rendered by Udit Narayan.

03. ” Tu Hi Re/Uyire Uyire” of Bombay (1995), Singers: Hariharan, Kavita Krishnamurthy/Hariharan, K. S. Chithra
One of the quintessential melancholic songs of all time which transcended all barriers – geographic, age, linguistic.

02.  ” Yeh Haseen Waadiyaan /Pudhu Vellai Mazhai” of Roja (1992), Singers: S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, K. S. Chithra/Unni Menon, Sujatha

Roja as a soundtrack galvanized the entire bollywood/kollywood movie-making industry and this song is probably one of the all time greatest romantic number.

01.  “Rasathi” of Thiruda Thiruda (1993), Singer: Shahul Hameed
Rasathi is undeniably one of the special song in the history of Indian cinema, the reason: It is constructed exclusively on chorus singing; providing the bass effect full time and female humming and chants that are layered in parallel in the background and hameed’s poignant voice adds more magic to it..
