Form and Void of Rust Cohle   Leave a comment

What makes Matthew McConaughey unique is his consistency in getting drunk on characters obsessions. The movies like Dazed and Confused (1993), The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), Killer Joe (2011), Mud (2012) , Dallas Buyers Club (2013), Interstellar (2014) stand testimonial to that. He finds ownership and freedom to portray characters that live on the fringe, who all are a bit on the outskirts of civilization and another classic example which stands above all, is his role as ‘Rust Cohle’ in the television crime drama series – True Detective.

True Detective is an American television crime drama created and written by Nic Pizzolatto. Season 1 revolves around a story of occult murder and detectives Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, are assigned to solve it.

To prepare for the role of Rust Cohle (who psychologically struggles to deal with his past, obsessiveness in solving a murder) , McConaughey himself created a 450-page evolutionary analysis of the character which he named “Four Stages of Rustin Cohle”, he named it as

  • 1995 Cohle
  • Crash
  • 2002 Cohle
  • 2012 Cohle

and continued “I wanted to get in that dude’s head. The obsession, the island of a man—I’m always looking for a guy who monologues. It’s something really important as I feel I’m going into my better work

The coverse effect of his obsession is transformed into nihilism as stated below:
I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware, nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself, we are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self; an accretion of sensory, experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody is nobody” (Rust Cohle, “The Long Bright Dark”, True Detective)

Filled with pure compassion, Cohle survived from himself because he was acknowledging that he does not know what he does not know.

O Kadhal Kanmani – Parandhu sella vaa   Leave a comment

Everytime Mani Ranthnam directs a movie, I feel that he dedicates it to his wife ‘Suhasini’, even when he ponders over the idea of making a movie he must be like, ‘I think I’d like to dedicate this movie to my lovely wife’, that is because his movies reflect terrific sincere romance, the ones which glorify unblemished love. O Kadhal kanmani (OKK) is his latest directorial venture and I am glad that I chose this one as a starter and thanks to subtitles, the movie watching experience was one of the most memorable.

For me, the only thing which mattered was Nithya Menon’s – Tara, she was terrific! If I were to interview Mr.Rathnam I would definitely ask this: what are the basic parameters that you’d visualize to be present in your strongest character, how do you conjure those? What are your references ? Is your Wife an inspiration to it?

okkkTara is the reason behind OKK’s commercial success, she is as graceful as she can get, the chief reasons being, the effervescent ‘Parandhu Sella Vaa’ or when she talks to Aadi after lovemaking, or when she comforts Ganapathi, Bhavani with her eloquent singing (Malargal ketten) or when she takes a ‘first- squabble-selfie’ or when she introduces herself to Aadi. She’s as sweet as a cheery pie and it is these seemingly insignificant moments that shine the most.

I wouldn’t blabber much about the movie and its mechanics, but would certainly shed light on Rantham’s feminist oeuvre and its evolution over time, films like Mounaraagam, Geethanjali, Roja, Bombay Alaipayuthey, and Yuva stands testimonial to that and now with OKK the stance is ever evolving.

Capricious Nonsense!   Leave a comment

What did I just watch, Blah! Vaastu Prakara is a total let down and it was an embarrassing experience.

  • Rakshit Shetty as Kubera – Pah! Total chutiyapa performance from him , esp when he attempts to cry with jaggesh, and his tagged m’lorean accent , he just can’t shun it!
  • Parul Yadav as Lawyer Nirmala – Amma thayi! such a torture, blaepet chickpet setu chicks can speak fluent kannada than her
  • Aishani Shetty as Ritu – Such a contrast! It’s hard to believe that Bhatt had conjured-up character like Ambika (Nidhi Subbaiah) in Pancharangi, and in VP Ritu is just another NRI-Charming-dumb-woogly-woogly-woosh-waaah-annoying girl.
  • Jaggesh and Bogse full godhi payasa antics are too much to view/listen to
  • Ananth Nag and Sudharani piece are the sanest
  • High five for Pathaje’s Cinematography

Just like his election song krantha, klinna, klantha, klistha, kruddha, kroora, krodha kokkre kaalu, VP is just another gig which doesn’t make sense at all!

Pepé le pew’s eck-eck of love!   Leave a comment

“Toujours l’amour!” says pep every time he meets Penelope his love interest, Pepé Le Pew is a french skunk who is always on the lookout for romance, Pep never ever gives up his amorous quest for love, he is a casanova who is distinctively pungent, nevertheless his lover-boy antics are always a treat to behold.

Pepé Le Pew’s is voiced by multi-talented Mel Blanc, combined with a creative English and French dialect, pep was an instant hit ! esp with the pickup lines which made him very popular, the accent+debonairsh persona makes him one of the most looniest toons ever.

Some of his greatest pickup lines:

Permit me to introduce myself. I am Pepe Le Pew, your lover!

Ah, ma cherie! You are very shy, n’est-ce pas? But it is love at first sight, no

I am the peanut butter. You are the jelly. Come, let us make a sandwich of love.

Come back darling, golden violet! I will unshy you! You are just insecure. All you need is a little occupational therapy, like making love! :D :D

I pierce you with the eck-eck of love, flower pot!

Where are you, my little object of art? I am going to collect you!

I, I get a kick out from her…

(Kissing the hapless female cat-as-skunk): “Ze moon! Ze June! Ze spoon! C’est l’amour!! C’est toujours!”

*Nearly falling off a cliff* “Do you know that when you are in love it is impossible to get insurance?!”

Did you know that when you are in love it is almost impossible to get insurance? But then, security isn’t everything.

Everyone should have a hobby, don’t you think? Mine is making love…You are a girl, I am a boy, We have all that in common, darling.

Eenie, meenie, miney mo, catch a lover by the toe, if she holler, hold her closer; eenie, meenie, miney mosa. O-U-T spells I love you!

Come to me, my melon baby collie!

I tell you what. You stop resisting me, and I, I will stop resisting you. When have you had a better offer than that?

Turn out the lights, darling. I know where everything is.

For her, I will make myself dainty!

Le hiss, hiss…I am a snake and you have charmed me, no?

Come, pink pigeon, we are wasting valuable time! Oh-ho, we are going to play “Ali Thief and the 40 Babas” yes? En guard rabbit! I am going to find you!

There are plenty of fish in the ocean… if you like fish. Personally, I prefer girls. Hmm, call it a weakness.

All right, Pink Rabbit. We have broken the ice. The courtship is now beginning…[kisses twice] Now starts the period of shy glances… [kisses] Fluttering eyelids… [kisses twice] Touching fingertips… [kisses three times before Penelope runs away] She must resist me because I am irresistible. What are you gonna do?

Unforgettable monolouge – Ego’s take on criticism   Leave a comment

“In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And that is precisely what Anton Ego conveys in Pixar’s Ratatouille, Ego’s metamorphic journey is from an irksome critic to the more liberated/granulated one. His monologue is well-reasoned and is one of the finest piece of writing.

“In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new, an extra-ordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: ‘Anyone can cook.’ But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau’s, who is, in this critic’s opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau’s soon, hungry for more.”

This is just one of the reason why I love Pixar!

Sakkre Pongal, Bakra Single! – Vaastu Prakara   Leave a comment

It’s the same old ingredients again = V.Harikrishna+yograj Bhatt+Jayanth Kaykini, the only difference is the wrapper. Vaastu Prakara is the new product of the above combo, starring: Rakshit Shetty, Jaggesh, Aishani Shetty, Parul Yadav, Anant Nag, Sudha Rani, T. N. Seetharam, Sudha Belawadi.

  • “Vaastu Prakaara” of Yogaraj Bhat , sung by Yogaraj Bhat, V. Harikrishna – ನೀರ್ ಕೊಕ್ಕರೆ , ಹಂದಿ and elections. Just can’t connect the dots.
  • “Simply Met Her” of Yogaraj Bhat, sung by V. Harikrishna – Has good intro, but gets muddled up with gibberish stuff, sakkre pongal and bakra single!
  • “Besara Kaatara” of Yogaraj Bhat, sung by Sonu Nigam – Nigams vocals are fabulous!
  • “Biddalle Beruri” of Jayant Kaikini, sung by Vijay Prakash – Perhaps the only song which makes sense, wonderful lyrics!
  • “Kabbadi Kabbadi” of Yogaraj Bhat , Sung by Tippu, V. Harikrishna – Also known as thamate music, whaat next? – Kabbadi Kabbadi .. :D :D
  • “Manege Nalku Moole” of Yogaraj Bhat , Sung by Tippu – An intro on how Vaastu is incorporated in everyday life , very.. very mediocre!

My Picks:

Besara Kaatara, Simply Met Her, Biddalle Beruri
