Lucia – Maze, Amazed!!   Leave a comment

The movie pays reverence to all those who supported in making , esp logos of different media brands (nowadays this is a common thing) the question that immediately popped in my head is – why don’t they make it just like Studio Ghibli or Janus Films, they just show their talisman : Totoro, Janus (roman god) and bang on! Movie starts, but yeah these days you gotta keep everyone happy, you gotta make business, you gotta promote brands, you gotta make yourself heard and all that blah! However, the only notable point here, is that the movie’s crowd funded, that’s really something new to Indian cinema, especially Kannada movie industry. So with that Pawan says,  “Making a Kannada film with Crowd Funding is to stir up things in the industry, to initiate a new wave, By attempting this we are changing the age old methods of movie making. Ours is an industry which refuses to change, which refuses to progress, which refuses to support new ideas and talent. With this initiative we could set an example for others to follow.”

Opening credits also commemorates 100 years of Indian Cinema! – Ah! I loved it, and the next thing was a voiceover, nonchalantly reciting kirtana of musician/saint/philosopher, Kanakadasa

Below is its effectively translated English version from K.Narasimha Murthy

Are you a creature of illusion? or illusion your creation? Are you a part of the body? Or is the body a part of you?

Is space within the house? Or the house within space? Or are both space and the house within the seeing eye?
Is the eye within the mind? Or the mind within the eye? Or are both the eye and the mind within you?

Does sweetness lie in sugar, or sugar in sweetness? Or do both sweetness and sugar lie in the tongue?
Is the tongue within the mind? Or the mind within the tongue? Or are both the tongue and the mind within you?

Does fragrance lie in the flower? Or the flower in fragrance? Or do both the flower and fragrance lie in the nostrils?
I cannot say, O Lord Adikeshava of Kaginele, O! peerless one, are all things within you alone?

It’s filled with such a deep meaning and probably it’ll hit you once you step out of the movie hall, nevertheless, the core essence of the movie adheres to the above statement, and I again wondered, loathed at our unawareness to such gems, I think we are a generation who are happy to pick western quotes and be chimerical about it.  :(

The movie begins with a man (Satish neenasam) lying in a coma on a ventilator. There’s police, asthmatic detective, media, television panelists, there’s so much happening on screen until extended opening credits roll out, and it really disappointed me because it was the same as David Fincher’s – Seven. After that, the movie interprets; two flashbacks which run parallel, a colored (physical) one in which Nikki (Satish neenasam) is an insomniac doorkeeper in a theater owned by his guru, well-wisher Shankaranna (Achyuth Kumar) and in another, thanks to the red pill, a black-n-white (delusional) one in which he is famous sliverscreen actor. In both parallels he is smitten, enamored by Shwetha’s (Shruthi Hariharan) vagaries.

The crux of the movie is all about how the paradoxes collide and the time taken for these worlds to converge is a bit longer which gives Pawan ample amount of time to delve on multifarious issues which is a bit annoying, Nevertheless the story demands audience’s attentiveness for a grand climax. I think Pawan wanted to convey so many things and he directs it as though he is making his last movie.

Briefing on some of the factual details depicted in movie:

  • Tribulations of Kannada theater owners.
  • Mafia involvement in economics of a movie.
  • On how Kannada Movie Industry is controlled by unaccustomed associates.
  • On the massier – cheesier aspects of a commercial movie – I just loved the movie title – Rome – English Hudgi , Kannadada Long :D
  • Penchant, perennial love for Kannada, Shankarnag. – Thinbeda kammi stands testimonial to this feature.
  • Paradoxes – Opulent class striving to be ordinary and the opposite. The inspiration behind it is Pawan’s own experiences and he proclaims “You initially enjoy the attention but then start hating the whole idea that people are looking at you all the time. That got me thinking about how it must be for a big star, for whom, a simple thing like eating street-food is a dream.”
  • What is Lucid Dreaming? Its fundamentals and attributes.
  • On finding your own voice, deep rooted-ness of the choices that you are unaware of.
  • On how Counterfeit medications fool people.
  • On Innocence, naivety, honesty, empathy – to which Satish does a stupendous job in conveying the same,  his expressions look so natural and its good thing which happened to Lucia because Pawan, initially had offered the role to Diganth.
  • Materialistic, yet emotional craving of the stronger sex. – To which my friend was like, look, this is how ‘Girl in love’ behaves , the minute they know its true love they will go any extent possible ;)

To me climax was just a tad bit disappointing because I could easily relate it to Inception and also there were elements which I could relate to Fight Club (lighting elements), Cinema Paradiso (Shankranna), Last Action Hero (Mafia Element). But I am neither complaining nor accusing Pawan of counterfeiting because it has exposed talents such as: Poorana Chandra Tejaswi (Music),  Siddarth Nuni (Camera) , Naveen Sajju (Singer), Bappi Blossom (Singer) , Ananya Bhat (Singer), Sanath-Suresh (Editing) , Achyuth Kumar (Supporting Role) and above all i am filled admiration for Pawan, on his vision and efforts to restore pride in Kannada Cinema.
