58th Filmfare Awards 2012 – Predictions   Leave a comment

The Indian film industry will mark its centenary celebrations this year. Also, Filmfare Awards will turn 60 in 2014. Therefore to celebrate this unique achievement, organizers of 58th Filmfare Awards 2012 have decided to go the Hollywood way, i.e integrate gold gold and bestow the special trophy to the awardees.

2012 has been really good year for the bollywood for the fact that most of the movies were non-conventional eg, Gangs Of Wasseypur, Kahaani , Paan Singh Tomar, Vicky Donor. With shoestring budget and terrific screenplay, they were really authentic, straightforward and very Indian. These movies have created a new trend in the bollywood industry and directors are striving hard to soak audience in neo-Indianness. The classic example: In GOW, Angurag Kashyap expresses his gratitude to tamil cinema for inspiring him to get back to his roots.

Ok, here we go with the predictions

0kahaani

Best Film

  • Barfi!
  • English Vinglish
  • Gangs Of Wasseypur
  • Kahaani
  • Vicky Donor

Barfi! , English Vinglish – heartwarming and too trendy, GOW – Brilliant filmmaking, Vicky Donor – superb concept, but I ll go with Kahaani – though the climax is very similar of to Jolie’s Taking Lives, Kahaani with its own uniqueness,  simply dazzles. It’s a fantastic thriller which mesmerizes you with the brilliant performances and cinematography.

Best Director

  • Anurag Basu – Barfi!
  • Anurag Kashyap – Gangs Of Wasseypur
  • Gauri Shinde – English Vinglish
  • Shoojit Sircar – Vicky Donor
  • Sujoy Ghosh – Kahaani

I have to pick Sujoy Ghosh as Best Director 2012 for depicting Kolkatta as a central character in Kahaani.

Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female)

  • Deepika Padukone – Cocktail
  • Kareena Kapoor – Heroine
  • Parineeti Chopra – Ishqazaade
  • Priyanka Chopra – Barfi!
  • Sridevi – English Vinglish
  • Vidya Balan – Kahaani

Omitted in the list is Rani Mukerjee for Aiyya.
Miss Padukone was damn hot in Cocktail, KK didn’t carry Chameli’s essence in Heroine, Parineeti was bold, refreshing in Ishqazaade, PC – big dud in Barfi! Sridevi was all refined, brilliant in English Vinglish. Nonetheless, without any kind of doubt, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) is “My name is Vidya Bagchi ..V.. ” :) has to go to Vidya Balan for her gritty role in Kahaani.

Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male)

  • Hrithik Roshan – Agneepath
  • Irrfan Khan – Paan Singh Tomar
  • Manoj Bajpayee – Gangs Of Wasseypur
  • Ranbir Kapoor – Barfi!
  • Salman Khan – Dabangg – 2
  • Shah Rukh Khan – Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Shah Rukh, Salman Khan – Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Dabangg – 2  ?!!?? Duh!! Cut Me Some Slack!! Where’s Nawazuddin Siddiqui for GOW?  Paresh Rawal for Oh my God! ?? They thoroughly deserved to be nominated and had absolutely earned it . So, that leaves me with three options and I’ll go with Irrfan Khan for brilliant performance in Paan Singh Tomar.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female)

  • Anushka Sharma – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Huma Qureshi – Gangs Of Wasseypur
  • Ileana D’Cruz – Barfi!
  • Rani Mukerjee – Talaash
  • Richa Chadda – Gangs Of Wasseypur

Anushka was all hippity hoppity in JTHJ, Ileana – naively beautiful in Barfi! Nothing much of Ms Mukerjee in Talaash, Huma Qureshi’s solid portrayal of Frustiyaao nahin moora, Upsettaao nahin moora was superb, but have pick Richa Chadda for her role as Nagma Khatoon , she has faithfully endorsed the notions of factual rustic identity which is in itself a very difficult thing to achieve in contemporary cinema.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male)

  • Akshay Kumar – Oh My God!
  • Annu Kapoor – Vicky Donor
  • Emraan Hashmi – Shanghai
  • Nawazuddin Siddiqui – Talaash
  • Rishi Kapoor – Agneepath

It has to be Annu Kapoor (Dr. Baldev Chaddha – MD, Infertility specialist) for his outstanding role in  Vicky Donor and this has to be the dialogue of the year Dr. Baldev Chaddha with his finger reflexes, inimitable panache to Vicky Arora: “Shakal dekh kar bande ka sperm pehchan jaata hu.. Aise DNA aryan race ke dekhe gaaye hain..Tu, pure aryan race hai..Aryan puttar hai.. Bhenchod!”  ;) :D

Best Music Director

  • Amit Trivedi – Ishqazaade
  • Pritam – Barfi!
  • Pritam – Cocktail
  • Sneha Khanwalkar – Gangs Of Wasseypur
  • Vishal – Shekhar – Student Of The Year

7 music collaborations in 2012 and 11 albums still to be released for 2013 and yet Pritam does not run out of steam and I really wonder how he manages it! Pritam is the winner this time for his exquisite, soulful music for Barfi!

Best Lyrics

  • Amitabh Bhattacharya – Abhi mujh mein kahin – Agneepath
  • Gulzar – Challa – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Gulzar – Saans – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Javed Akthar – Jee le zara – Talaash
  • Swanand Kirkire – Aashiyan – Barfi!

Check out the names, Gulzar, Javed Akthar – bollywood’s most celebrated lyricists and added to that Swanand Kirkire, Amitabh Bhattacharya – National Film Award winners (Best Lyrics) , I would’ve also included Amitabh Bhattacharya’s Rabta in this list and on the other hand will hesitantly elect to choose Abhi mujh mein kahin for Best Lyrics fof 2012.

songs

Best Playback Singer (Male)

  • Ayushmann Khurrana – Pani da rang – Vicky Donor
  • Mohit Chauhan – Ala barfi – Barfi!
  • Nikhil Paul George – Main kya karoon – Barfi!
  • Rabbi – Challa – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Sonu Nigam – Abhi mujh mein kahin – Agneepath

This list’s a bit inadequate… particularly missing are, Javed Ali for Ishaqzaade , Javed Bashir for Kahaani and KK for Jannat2  and out of the lot I’ll go with Nigam’s Abhi mujh mein kahin. However I still believe Roop Kumar Rathod’s O Saiyyan was better than Nigam’s quintessential poignancy.

Best Playback Singer (Female)

  • Kavita Seth – Tumhi ho bandhu – Cocktail
  • Neeti Mohan – Jiya re – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Shalmali Kholgade – Pareshaan – Ishaqzaade
  • Shreya Ghoshal – Saans – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
  • Shreya Ghoshal – Chikni chameli – Agneepath

It’s tricky again, Seth modulations for Tumhi ho bandhu – exceptional!! And so is Neeti’s bubbly tempo for Jiya re, and I am short of superlatives for Shreya’s voice , it’s the most perfect thing, notice that contrast Saans – a patho love song and Chikni chameli – item number and she makes it look so… easy!!! But this time have to pick Shalmali Kholgade – dubbed as the newest Bollywood singing sensation, made her dream entry in Ishaqzaade lending her opulent voice for the dreamy lyrical “Pareshaan” which is just sumptuously delicious.
