Brainy is the new sexy”   12 comments

This is how I want you to remember me. The woman who beat you.” says Irene Adler, to Sherlock Homles in BBC’s Sherlock- Season 2 episode: “A Scandal in Belgravia.” Quintessentially sapiosexual, Irene Adler is passionate about Sherlock and believes Brainy is the new sexy because she feels attached, elated on an intellectual plane that which stimulates her deeper yearning for unadulterated love. Sherlock who rarely confirms any signs of vulnerability is mesmerized by her intense rationale; to him she is an epitome of beauty, sophistication and develops intangible sensitivity towards the… woman.

Perhaps such traits of very fine elegance can also be observed in Sunil Kumar desai’s Kannada movie: ಬೆಳದಿಂಗಳ ಬಾಲೆ. It is based on a Telugu novel titled Vennelalo Aadapilla by Yandamoori Veerendranath and although while similar; highlighting the intellectual assertion, the movie tends to focus more on simpler, graceful, comforting textures of contemporary life.

I still remember the day when I saw the movie, it was back in July 1995; Sagar theatre, Bangalore and still can effortlessly recall the how the images (I wonder!) of it took me into another dimension. In the midst of multilayered intricacies that the movie possesses, I did not fathom its in-depth connotations (I was in 7th STD); but now it took me a few viewings, to fully understand the interpretations of Sunil Kumar Desai that primarily emphasizes on the core human nature, resting on an intellectual plane.

Boasting of a solid star cast, Desai takes the audience on a journey into ordinarily-strange world which is colored by amazing poetry, skewed puzzles, brilliant monologues (crystal clear kannada) and contain traces of Cognitive psychology.

Beladingala Bale’s Star cast:

  • Anant Nag        …         Revanth (Chess Grandmaster/Deputy Chief Executive)
  • Ramesh Bhatt   …         James (Cartoonist)
  • Loknath            …         Managing Director (Kanara Advertising Firm)
  • Vanita Vasu      …         Rajasulochana (Telephone operator)
  • Shivram            …         Professor Hucchuraya ( Mathematics)
  • Majula Gururaj…          Ramya – Beladingala Bale (voice)
  • Suman Nagarkar…       Beladingala Bale (Revanth’s Imaginary invention)

A Brief overview on some of the indispensable facets of the movie that were really impressive! (In Cronological Order)

In an endeavor to find true name of mysterious lady, James nonchalantly boasts about greatness of Revanth (MBA passout, Chess Grandmaster) explains her about the importance of being beautiful and bluntly asks to reveal her identity for which she brilliantly explains his behavioral psychology through Classical conditioning:

The mysterious lady challenges Revanth with a puzzle, to identify the public phone number.
The number is six digits
1. 2nd no is 2x times the 1st number.
2. 3rd is 3x times the 1st number
3. Difference between 3rd and 4th is 8
4. 4th number divided by 2 is the 5th number
5. 5th number multiplied by 2 gives you the 6th number
Revanth and James come up with the telephone number: 469124 however, the correct answer to the puzzle: 358000.

She is amazed that Revanth doesn’t know meaning of his name!

The mysterious lady beautifully expresses her alias name with the help this fabulous piece of poetry.
And introduces herself (an oxford graduate (Psychology), but doesn’t say her name ) and her family,  and involuntarily proposes him over the phone. Again, she gives another hint to find the telephone number “First and last number is 6 and the rest, is of the riddle: I ate nothing for 6 ghante kaala”, she provides him a time frame of one month to solve the riddle.

She lectures him on Cultural feminism:

A wonderful song with evocative lyrics:

ಈ ಬಾಳ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ… ನನ್ನ ಗುರಿಯಾದೆ ನೀನು;
ದೂರದೊಂದು ಲೋಕದಿಂದ…. ನನಗಾಗಿ ಇಳಿದು ಬಂದು;
Also, this song is a Beautiful allegorical Reference to Asha Bhonsle’s : Teri kyhalon mein hum, (Movie: Geet Gaya Pathron Ne -1964, Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri ) which is incidentally Beladingala bale’s favorite number.

Revanth finally cracks the riddle, actual name of Beladingala bale: Ramya.

During a chess tournament (local), Revanth is accused of hypnotizing  the opponent (Prabakar-Avinash). The author drew inspiration from the factual Korchnoi/Karpov incident.

Revanth is utterly disappointed with the allegations; Ramya supports and strengthens his confidence by encouraging him to play blindfold chess (simultaneously against 7 opponents).

Only after two weeks of courtship, James announces to Revanth that he will be getting married to Sulochana. Revanth is utterly surprised, wonders at the suddenness of his decision but James perceives marriage as a platform to satiate instinctive biological need also conveys marriage is a risk, and therefore he is ready to take the risk with anyone. Consequently, Revnath and Ramya mull over the topic ‘Abstinence vs. Indulgence’, and Ramya further simplifies, elucidates both the qualitative features as

To solve the riddle, James and Revanth seek help of Prof. Hucchuraya who is quite an aficionado of Kannada. Confrontations of Revanth, Hucchuraya, Ramya are brilliantly executed, perhaps one of the film’s most memorable moments. (some excerpts)

Actually, [Tanθ/√(1+ Tan2θ)] = [Tanθ/√(Sec2θ)]= [Sinθ], So if θ=88 Degree (Revanth and James in fact measure the angle of Ambedkar’s  hand pointing towards east !! :P ), then answer is 0.9993908 which is nowhere near to the solution (actual telephone number – 6137336.)

It is exceptional, remarkable on how successfully Ramya incorporates the beauty of Kannada native words in her expressions of longing.

This time again, an allegorical Reference to Mukesh’s :  Mein to yek khwaab hoon, (Movie: Himalaya Ki God Mein -1965, Lyrics: Qamar Jalalabadi )

Sulochana enquires about James to which Revanth distinctively explains his friend’s behavior which can be related to the Truth table of AND Gate (According to Thomas Riley , a man’s journey into personal growth (holistic and spiritual) and empowerment is primarily observed in four stages).

World is a better place

I feel myself better

Revanth’s recommendation to Sulochana : take James into a zone, show him the untarnished reality where-in he understands and recognizes that both I, and the external world are in Harmony.

Conversations between Sulochana, James are colorful, more realistic and mature. On their wedding night James casually, straightforwardly asks: are you good in bed? Also conveys that he doesn’t expect her to be a virgin and lectures on love, life. Trap. Just a Trap”.  Sulochana drops a bomb on James that she is the elusive ಬೆಳದಿಂಗಳ ಬಾಲೆ, the mystery girl who his friend (Revanth) is intensely, madly in love with. On hearing such a terrible confession, James is bitterly disappointed ; feels remorseful, agitated. He attempts to ignore the past and accept his wife the way she is but deep down in his heart, he knows that everything will not be the same. Conversely, his flippant attitude transforms itself into a stable, responsible one. Finally, special mention should be made on Sulochanas and Ramyas instinctive nurturing talent; with very little deviation they remain firm in their assessments and endlessly love their respective interests.

While playing chess against Russian Grandmaster (Polonski), Revanth ultimately cracks the code.

Ramya finally succumbs to actue hepatic type intermittent porphyria!

The big event the story is the climax , a haunting closing Voice-over (some excerpts)

Cites Thomas Campbell’s Quote: How delicious is the winning of a kiss at the love’s beginning

  1. Well researched and beautifully written :)

  2. Thank you Nandini, for your generous compliments :)

  3. It’s well deserved. Actually it is for both of your blogs. I read few things from both of your blogs and I liked it :)

  4. Thanks for reading, and I’m glad you enjoyed it ! :)

  5. Excellent article on my favourite film. I am impressed at the way you have noted the finer details of the movie. By the way, do read my take on Beladingala Baale here – http://www.raveeshkumar.com/#!/2012/03/all-about-beladingala-baale.html

  6. Thanks a lot Raveesh for your compliments! :)

    giridhar devale
  8. Ramya conveys that “First and last number is 6 and the rest, is of the riddle: I ate nothing for 6 ghante kaala” and provides Revanth a time frame of one month to solve the riddle. In the movie it is not clearly explained how to arrive to an answer or solve the meaning of ‘6 ghante kaala’ , nevertheless the phone number is – 6137336

  9. Man, this is too …too good. I cannot thank you enough for this comprehensive review. Kudos for your analysis and all the references you’ve given. So many ‘eureka’ type moments as I read your review. More power to you.

I liked minor details in the films such as Lokanath’s character saying to Revanth ” Have you ever heard a company employing a chess player?” This is symptomatic of a larger attitude in India towards games other than cricket in our public space.

Sadly the film did not fare as well it should have in the box office. Sunil Kumar Desai had narrated the script to ABCL (Amitabh Bachhan’s production house) for Hindi remake of Beladingala Baale. They liked it and were considering roping Amir Khan to play the lead. Apparently they had even given an advance money. The film did not take off.

Sunil Kumar Desai is a terrible shape right now. There are structural barriers for him to pursue the only vocation he knows–cinema. He has a case filed by one Narayan Hosmane who was a co producer for his ramya chaitra kaala for a bounced cheque of four lakhs. The film that he announced last year from whatever little I heard from the media has an interesting concept. Hope it takes off.

Have you seen Desai’s Prema Raga Hadu Gelathi ? I haven’t seen but this, one scene thats on youtube is so so well composed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwSMJXMrosM

Also, Anant Nag speaks here about the making of Beladingala Bale https://soundcloud.com/vktkv/anant-nag-on-sunil-kumar

  10. thanks vikatakavi for your compliments! i believe Amair khan just cannot put himself in revanths character it’ll be boring. My sanskrit lecturer in college spoke about Mr.Desai and about his struggles as a flim-maker, and he is indeed dogged by constant instances of sheer bad luck. Yes had watched Prema Raga Hadu Gelathi in Triveni , this was way back in ’97 :)

  11. Hatsoff to you

  12. This one made my day :-) very well written.
