Melody king’s Chronicle – Mausam   Leave a comment

Mausam is a forthcoming Romantic-drama movie of Pankaj Kapoor, starring – Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak . Music director is Pritam Chakraborty and lyrics for all the tracks are written by Irshad Kamil. The duo had tremendous success with Jab we met and there is a greater possibility that the same feat is imitated for Mausam because the music tracks have the same ingredients and echoes the same essence as it did for Jab we met. However, Mausam with deeper meaningful lyrics has more of a classical-sufi touch to it.

On various instances you many find the music to be very similar, find it to be having a comparable versions of pritam’s ex-set-pieces. Neverthless, Mausam has 13 tracks which are essentially good, six regular tracks and the rest; reprises, remixes. Most of the songs have an orthodox feel with simple Hindi-Punjabi-Urdu Lyrics. The one good thing i find in bollywood music album is it has everything, mix of drums-electronica, sufi-music, classical, love-songs, sad-songs, Bhangra, Garba etc. Jab we met had it all and it’s just the same with Mausam. Most of the directors would like to take minimum risk and always aim to stick with the ‘tired & tested’ formula and thus the scope for experimentation is very limited.

Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye of Shahid Mallya, Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye (II) of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Very similar to “Aaj Din Chadhaya”(Luv Aaj Kal), this number is a simple, easy going energetic love song. It has 2 versions, sung by vastly talented Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shahid Mallya. I would go with mallya’s version because the voice is extremely fresh and unadulterated.

Sajh Dhaj Ke of Mika Singh & Pankaj Kapoor, Sajh Dhaj Ke (Desi Mix Tiger Style) of Mika Singh & Pankaj Kapoor, Sajh Dhaj Ke (Club Mix Tiger Style) of Mika Singh & Pankaj Kapoor
Mika shines in this animated Bhangra track, which has entertaining lyrics, music. Again, there are 2 remix versions of the same, Desi mix tiger style and club mix tiger style :) which are smartly composed.

Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi of Hans Raj Hans, Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi (Reprise) of Shahid Mallya, Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi (Mehfil Mix) of Wadali Brothers
Heavily sufi influenced track with some terrific lyrics, has 3 versions, the number that leaves a good impact is the jugalbandi – Mehfil Mix from Wadali Brothers, just love this line from PB reviewRaw, rustic, mostly unmixed feel throughout the soundtrack, with dollops of harmonium, just create the right effect!

Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain of Rashid Khan
Ustad Rashid Khan fashioned the extraordinaire ‘Aaoge Jab Tum’ in Jab we met and he’s back with Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain, this is most soul-stirring track of the album and has some deep-contemplative lyrics.

Aag Lage Us Aag Ko of Karsan Sargathia
Is dynamic-Gujrati-based folk song, very much in analogous with ‘Dholi taro dhol’ of HDDCS.

Mallo Malli of Tochi Raina, Mallo Malli (Remix) of Tochi Raina, Mallo Malli (II) of Lehmber Hussainpuri &  Hard Kaur
Has an intro that is very similar to prtiam’s own composition ‘thayn thayn’ for ‘Dum maro dum’. Even so, Mallo Malli has Punjabi lyrics with modern electronica-dj-punkish feel and again has 2 remix versions to it.

So, on the whole Masuam has some really good tracks with a lot of conventional, straightforward music. Pritam Chakraborty composition is indeed very impressive for the fact that he composes music for about 15-17 movies a year! Will it emulate the success of Jab we met?It has all the potential but also depends on how much shor the movie makes.

My picks:
Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi (Mehfil Mix) of Wadali Brothers, Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye of Shahid Mallya, Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain of Rashid Khan
